About the Toyota Tundra

The Tundra is Toyota's full-size half-ton pickup, sold only in North America for most of its life and built in San Antonio, Texas. It has always been the outsider in a segment dominated by Detroit, competing on a reputation for durability rather than on tow ratings. Tire shoppers land here across 18- to 22-inch fitments, and the 2022 redesign changed almost every size on the truck.

Launched in 2000. Launched for the 2000 model year, the Tundra replaced the T100 as Toyota's first serious attempt at an American full-size pickup, and it was the first Japanese-brand truck in the class offered with a V8.

What the press said

The Tundra has always drawn respect for build quality and suspicion about competitiveness. The 2007 truck was praised for its 5.7-liter V8 and criticized for a plasticky interior, and it then went years without a serious update while rivals redesigned twice. The 2022 truck was better received for its coil-sprung rear end, hybrid i-Force Max powertrain and much better cabin, but testers repeatedly noted that real-world fuel economy does not match the EPA numbers and that maximum tow and payload figures still trail the domestic trucks. Reliability reputation remains the model's strongest card in the press.

The Tundra does all the full-size pickup things well enough but can't match the competition when it comes to max towing, payload, or ultimate luxury.

Was it a success?

Never a volume winner, with US sales that have rarely passed a fifth of the F-Series total, but a commercial success on its own terms and now selling better than at any time since 2008. Resale is the Tundra's party trick: high-mileage 5.7 V8 trucks hold money in a way no rival does. Reliability reputation is excellent for the 2007-2021 V8, more mixed for the newer twin-turbo V6 after early engine replacements, and the 2000-2003 trucks had well-documented frame rust problems that led to a buyback program. Tire sizes on the third-generation truck are less widely stocked than the domestic equivalents.

Tire options on the Toyota Tundra

On 2007-2021 trucks the fitments are 255/70R18 on SR and SR5, 275/65R18 on TRD and 1794, and 275/55R20 on Limited and Platinum. The 2022 redesign changed all of them: 265/70R18 on SR5, 285/65R18 on the TRD Pro, 265/60R20 on Limited and Platinum and 265/50R22 on Capstone, which makes cross-shopping between generations a trap. Nothing is staggered and no Tundra uses factory run-flats; OE tires are usually Michelin, Bridgestone Dueler or Falken all-seasons, with Falken Wildpeak all-terrains on the TRD Pro. Upsizing to 33x12.50R18 or 33x12.50R20 is common and usually needs only minor trimming on the older truck. If you tow near the 12,000-pound rating, stay at or above the OE load index; the 265-section 20- and 22-inch sizes have fewer load-range options than a comparable Ford or Chevrolet fitment, and 265/50R22 winter tires are hard to source.
