The 4Runner is Toyota's body-on-frame mid-size SUV, one of the last of its kind sold in the United States. It uses truck underpinnings, a low-range transfer case on four-wheel-drive models and a live rear axle, which is why it keeps selling to people who actually leave the pavement. Praise went consistently to the low-range transfer case, the KDSS suspension, the roll-down rear window and the sheer mechanical simplicity. The 2025 redesign was better received for its modern powertrain and cabin, with testers noting that the hybrid is now required for the most capable trims.

An unlikely commercial success: sales of the fifth-generation 4Runner rose sharply over a model cycle in which the vehicle itself barely changed. Resale is among the best of any vehicle sold in the United States, and clean high-mileage examples often ask close to what they cost new. The 1GR-FE V6 and five-speed automatic have an excellent long-term record, and the main cautions are corrosion on early trucks in salt states and air-injection pump failures on the 2003-2009 V8. All-terrain tires in the 17-inch sizes are cheap and plentiful.

Tire options on the Toyota 4Runner

Fifth-generation trucks run 265/70R17 on SR5 and TRD Off-Road and 245/70R17 on some trims, while Limited sits on 20-inch wheels and the 2025 truck moves to 265/70R18. Very few 4Runners keep their original tires: 265/70R17 owners commonly move to 285/70R17 or LT285/70R17 all-terrains, and a 33-inch tire fits with minor trimming, while 34- and 35-inch sizes need a lift. Nothing is staggered and there are no factory run-flats; OE fitments are usually Bridgestone Dueler, Michelin LTX or Goodyear Wrangler, with Nitto Terra Grappler on the TRD Pro. If you tow near the 5,000-pound rating or carry roof-top gear, keep the OE load index and prefer a load-range-C or D LT tire over a passenger-rated flotation size. Winter and studdable all-terrain choice in 265/70R17 is excellent, which is another reason owners of 20-inch Limiteds often buy a 17-inch wheel set for the cold months.
