About the Toyota Tacoma

The Tacoma is Toyota's mid-size pickup and the long-standing sales leader in that class in the United States. It is built in Texas and Mexico and sold in a wide spread of cab, bed and drivetrain combinations, with the TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro versions making up much of the volume. Tire shoppers land here because a very large share of owners fit all-terrain tires and step up a size, so the OE fitment is often not what ends up on the truck.

The Tacoma's press record is unusual: reviewers criticized it for years while conceding that it outsold everything in the class. Complaints in the third generation focused on a cramped driving position with a low seat, a noisy cabin, a coarse 3.5-liter V6 and a ride that never settled. Praise went to the off-road hardware, the resale values and the sheer number of configurations, including the last manual gearbox in the class. The 2024 truck was received more warmly for its rear coil springs, quieter cabin and much improved interior, though testers still note that it cannot tow as much as a Ranger or Colorado.

The latest Taco offers improved comfort and convenience alongside competitive capability.

Was it a success?

A commercial success with no real parallel in the mid-size truck class, holding first place in the US every year since the segment revived. Resale is the best-known thing about the model: a five-year-old TRD Off-Road routinely retains a share of its price that no rival matches. Reliability reputation is very strong for the drivetrain, with the caveats of frame corrosion on early trucks, leaf-spring noise on second-generation models and automatic transmission shift-quality complaints on 2016-2019 trucks. All-terrain tire choice in the common sizes is enormous.

Tire options on the Toyota Tacoma

SR and SR5 4x4 trucks in the 2016-2023 generation run 245/75R17, TRD Sport and TRD Off-Road use 265/65R17, and the 2024 truck moves to 265/70R18 on its off-road trims. Very few Tacomas keep their original tires: 265/70R17, 265/75R16, 285/70R17 and LT285/70R17 are all common upsizes, and a 33-inch tire fits most third-generation trucks with only minor trimming of the front bumper valance. Nothing is staggered and there are no factory run-flats; OE tires are usually Goodyear Wrangler, Michelin Defender or Bridgestone Dueler, with Goodyear Wrangler all-terrains on the TRD Pro. Load rating matters more here than on a half-ton, because the Tacoma's payload is modest and many flotation-size all-terrains carry a lower load index than the OE tire; if you haul a camper or tow near the 6,500-pound rating, look for a load-range-C or D LT tire rather than a passenger-rated 33.
