About the Toyota Sienna
The Sienna is Toyota's minivan, a three-row front-drive people carrier with sliding side doors, and since 2021 the only one in the US sold exclusively as a hybrid. It is also the only minivan in the American market offered with all-wheel drive for most of its recent life. Tire shoppers land here across 17- to 20-inch fitments, and load rating matters more than people expect on a fully loaded eight-seater.
Launched in 1998. Launched for the 1998 model year, the Sienna replaced the rear-drive Previa with a front-drive minivan on Camry underpinnings, built in Indiana and designed specifically for American families rather than adapted from a Japanese van.

Second generation (XL20)
Much bigger, long and wide enough to seat eight, and the first Sienna with optional all-wheel drive. The nose is rounded with a large sloping windshield and the rear quarter windows extend well past the sliding doors. Sixteen-inch wheels on CE, 17s on XLE.
2011-2020
Third generation (XL30)
A squarer body with a sharply stepped beltline behind the sliding door and, on the SE trim, a black mesh grille and lowered suspension, which was unusual for a minivan. A 2018 facelift brought a much larger lower grille. Seventeen-inch wheels on LE and XLE, 18s on SE and Limited.
2021-2024
Fourth generation (XL40)
Hybrid only, with a 2.5-liter engine and no non-hybrid option, and a much more aggressive shape with a deep grille, a heavy crease down the flanks and a floating roof treatment. The second row slides on long rails but cannot be removed. Eighteen-inch wheels on LE and XLE, 20s on XSE and Platinum.

The Sienna has been reviewed as the sensible, durable choice in a small class, with the all-wheel-drive option and the resale values as its distinguishing features. The 2021 hybrid-only redesign was received well for fuel economy that no other minivan comes close to, and for ride comfort in all three rows. Criticism went to a coarse engine note under acceleration, a second row that cannot be removed unlike Chrysler's Stow 'n Go seats, and styling that divided testers. Reviewers generally rate the Chrysler Pacifica as better to drive and the Honda Odyssey as better packaged, while conceding the Sienna is the one that will still be running at 250,000 miles.
Minivans get a bad rap, but the Toyota Sienna makes large-family schlepping both comfortable and efficient.

US Sienna sales peaked at 163,269 in 2006 and have run between roughly 43,000 and 108,000 a year since 2018, with the 2020 low reflecting the changeover to the hybrid model.
Was it a success?
A steady commercial success in a shrinking class, and it has outlasted most of its rivals. Resale is the best in the segment by a clear margin, helped by the hybrid drivetrain and by demand from ride-hailing and livery operators. Reliability reputation is excellent: the 3.5-liter V6 in 2011-2020 vans and the hybrid system in the current one both have strong records, with sliding-door motor and mechanism failures the most common complaint across generations. Tires in 235/60R18 are affordable and easy to find.
