About the Toyota Highlander

The Highlander is Toyota's mid-size three-row crossover, a unibody family SUV positioned between the RAV4 and the body-on-frame Sequoia. It was one of the first car-based three-row SUVs in the US and for years the default choice for families who wanted seven seats without a minivan. Tire shoppers land here across 17- to 20-inch fitments, with 235/65R18 the volume size on recent cars.

US Highlander sales peaked at 264,128 in 2021 and fell sharply from 2023 onward as buyers moved to the larger Grand Highlander, which Toyota reports separately.

Was it a success?

A long-running commercial success whose volume has collapsed since 2023, not because the vehicle got worse but because Toyota introduced a bigger sibling that answers the one complaint everyone had about it. Resale is excellent, particularly on hybrids. Reliability reputation is among the best in the class, with the 3.5-liter V6 and the hybrid system both having long, clean records and the main complaints being infotainment software and some 2020-2021 fuel pump recalls. Tires in 235/65R18 are widely stocked and reasonably priced.
