About the Ram 2500
The Ram 2500 is the three-quarter-ton member of Ram's heavy-duty pickup line, sold as a Dodge through 2009 and under the standalone Ram brand since 2010. Tire shoppers land here because heavy-duty trucks are the one segment where load range genuinely decides the purchase: the payload and tow ratings on the door jamb depend on the tires carrying them. Fitments run from 17-inch LT tires on work trucks to 20-inch wheels on Laramie and Limited trims, plus a large aftermarket in 33- to 37-inch flotation sizes.

Third generation (DR/DH)
Sharper, squarer version of the big-rig look with a forward-leaning grille, separate fenders and a crosshair grille insert. Solid front axle on four-wheel-drive trucks, leaf springs at both ends, and 17-inch wheels wearing LT tires on nearly everything. The 5.9 Cummins gave way to the 6.7 for 2007.

2010-2013
Fourth generation (Ram brand)
First heavy duty sold as a Ram rather than a Dodge, with a taller, flatter grille carrying the Ram's head badge and a much better interior. Wheels moved to 17 or 18 inches, and Tradesman and Big Horn trucks commonly run LT275/70R18. The rear axle is still on leaf springs.

2014-2018
Fourth generation facelift
Revised front end with a one-piece grille and projector headlights, and the change that matters mechanically: coil-spring rear suspension replaced the leaf springs on the 2500, with optional rear air springs. The Power Wagon of this era comes on 33-inch tires with locking differentials and a factory winch. Upper trims moved to 18- and 20-inch wheels.

2019-2024
Fifth generation (DT)
Completely new body with a tall, split grille, a raised hood line and a 12-inch portrait touchscreen inside. Tradesman and Big Horn stay on 18s, while Laramie and Limited run 20-inch wheels with LT275/65R20 tires. The Cummins inline-six climbed past 1,000 pound-feet of torque in high-output form.

What the press said
The heavy-duty Ram is usually the reviewers' pick on ride quality and interior, and the usual runner-up on outright capability. Testers credit the coil-spring rear suspension introduced for 2014 with making the 2500 far more civilized than a leaf-sprung Ford or Chevrolet, and the 2019 interior with being better than anything else in the class. Criticism centers on price, fuel consumption with either engine, and tow ratings that Ford and GM have generally edged out. The Cummins inline-six is consistently praised, and the Power Wagon is treated as a special case that reviewers like more than its numbers justify.
Unquestionably capable, the Ram HD doesn't need to beat you up just to prove how tough it is.

Was it a success?
A commercial success that took Ram from an also-ran to a consistent number two or three in US pickup sales, and the heavy duties are the most profitable part of that. Resale on a diesel 2500 is strong enough that a well-maintained 10-year-old truck can still be expensive. The Cummins engine itself has a good reputation; the emissions hardware, front-end components on four-wheel-drive trucks and the 68RFE automatic behind the diesel are the usual sources of expensive repairs.

Tire options on the Ram 2500
Nearly every 2500 leaves the factory on LT-metric tires in load range E, which is a 10-ply rating, and that is what the payload and tow numbers on the door sticker assume, so dropping to a P-metric or load range C tire quietly reduces what the truck is rated to carry. Common factory sizes are LT245/70R17 and LT265/70R17 on the third generation, LT275/70R18 on Tradesman and Big Horn trucks, and LT275/65R20 on Laramie and Limited. Factory brands are typically Firestone Transforce, Goodyear Wrangler or Bridgestone Dueler, in highway or all-terrain patterns depending on trim, and the Power Wagon ships with 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler DuraTracs. Run-flats are not used on any heavy duty and the fitments are square, so a set of five including the full-size spare is normal. Owners upsize a lot, usually to 34- or 35-inch tires such as LT285/75R17 or flotation sizes like 35x12.50R20, which needs a leveling kit at minimum and costs fuel economy and speedometer accuracy; for winter work look for a studdable load range E all-terrain rather than a passenger winter tire, which will not carry the weight.
