About the GMC Sierra 1500

The Sierra 1500 is GMC's half-ton pickup, built on the same platform and in the same plants as the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 but sold at a higher average price. It exists mainly to serve the Denali and AT4 end of the market, which is where most of its volume now sits. Tire shoppers land here across 17- to 22-inch fitments, and the sizes mirror the Silverado almost exactly.

Reviewers generally treat the Sierra as the Silverado with better trim, and most of the praise and criticism carries across. Specific to GMC, the MultiPro tailgate has been called the most genuinely useful gimmick in the segment, and Denali interiors from 2022 onward were judged a real step up in materials. The consistent criticism is pricing: testers note that a loaded Denali Ultimate costs as much as a luxury SUV, and that lower SLE trims do not feel distinct enough from a Chevrolet to justify the premium. Super Cruise hands-free driving has been well reviewed but is restricted to the expensive end of the range.

The GMC Sierra is just as tough as its Chevy cousin but brings a bit more class and refinement to the workweek.

Was it a success?

Quietly one of GM's most profitable lines, and the only full-size pickup whose US volume has grown steadily through the 2020s. Denali trims account for a large share of sales and hold value well. Mechanically it is a Silverado, so the same notes apply: strong V8s and diesel, but lifter failures and oil consumption on some cylinder-deactivation V8s, and early ten-speed automatic complaints. Tire sizing is identical to the Silverado, which means excellent availability in every fitment except the 22-inch Denali Ultimate size.

Tire options on the GMC Sierra 1500

Base and fleet trucks run 255/70R17, SLE and SLT use 265/65R18, and the popular 20-inch fitment is 275/55R20 through 2018 and 275/60R20 from 2019. Denali Ultimate sits on 275/50R22, the most expensive size in the range and the hardest one to find winter tires for. AT4 comes on 275/65R18 all-terrains and AT4X on 275/70R18, and those two sizes are the standard upsize path for 18-inch SLE owners who want more sidewall. Nothing is staggered and no Sierra uses factory run-flats; OE fitments are usually Goodyear Wrangler or Michelin on street trims and Goodyear Wrangler Territory on the off-road trims. If you tow at the 13,000-pound end of the range, keep the OE load index or step up to an LT tire in load range E rather than a cheaper passenger-metric equivalent.
