About the Ford F-250/F-350

The F-250 and F-350 are the three-quarter-ton and one-ton members of Ford's Super Duty line, a separate truck from the F-150 with its own frame, cab and axles. They exist to tow and haul, and that makes the tire decision a load calculation rather than a comfort one: the payload and trailer ratings on the door jamb assume tires of a specific load range. Sizes run from LT235/85R16 on early work trucks to 20-inch fitments on Lariat and Platinum trims, plus a large aftermarket in 35- and 37-inch flotation sizes.

Launched in 1999. Launched for 1999, the Super Duty split Ford's heavy pickups away from the F-150 for the first time, with a taller cab, a much stronger frame, a solid front axle on four-wheel-drive trucks and the 7.3-liter Power Stroke diesel.

Reviewers consistently rank the Super Duty at or near the top of the heavy-duty class on capability, and its towing and payload figures have led the segment for most of the past decade. Praise goes to the 6.7-liter Power Stroke, the sheer range of cab, bed and axle combinations, and the fact that upper trims are genuinely luxurious. Criticism is aimed at the price of a loaded King Ranch or Platinum, at some of the towing electronics such as the trailer backup assist, and at a ride that reviewers find firmer than the coil-sprung Ram. The gasoline 7.3-liter V8 introduced for 2020 was welcomed as a cheaper alternative for buyers who do not tow every day.

Ford reports F-Series as a single line covering the F-150 and the Super Duty together, so no separate published US series exists for the F-250 and F-350; the figures above are the combined F-Series totals, of which the Super Duty is usually about a third.

Was it a success?

The best-selling vehicle line in the United States for more than four decades, and the Super Duty is the most profitable part of it. Used values on crew-cab four-wheel-drive diesels stay high enough that a ten-year-old truck can cost as much as a new car. The reputation is generation-dependent: the 7.3-liter Power Stroke is revered, the 6.0-liter of 2003-2007 is the one to avoid without documented repairs, and Ford's own 6.7-liter from 2011 onward has a good record.

Super Duty tires are LT-metric in load range E as standard, which is a 10-ply rating, and the dual-rear-wheel F-350 typically goes a step further into load range F or G on a narrower tire; the numbers on the door sticker assume those ratings, so fitting anything lighter reduces what the truck is legally rated to carry. Common factory sizes are LT235/85R16 on early work trucks, LT245/75R17 through the 2000s and early 2010s, and LT275/70R18 or LT275/65R20 on modern Lariat and Platinum trims. Factory brands are usually Michelin LTX, Goodyear Wrangler or General Grabber in highway or all-terrain patterns, with no run-flats anywhere and no staggered fitments, and the spare is a full-size matching tire on most configurations.
