The Tahoe is Chevrolet's full-size, body-on-frame SUV, a short-wheelbase companion to the Suburban built on the same platform as the Silverado. It seats seven or eight, tows heavily and is bought in large numbers by families, fleets and police departments. Tire shoppers land here because the range spans a tall 18-inch fitment on LS and LT and a low-profile 22-inch on the top trims.

Launched in 1995. Launched in 1995, the Tahoe name replaced the two-door Blazer on Chevrolet's full-size SUV and, crucially, added a four-door body for the first time, which turned it from a niche truck into a family vehicle.

The Tahoe's reviews changed sharply with the 2021 model, because the switch to an independent rear suspension fixed the criticism reviewers had made for two decades about a useless third row and a high load floor. Praise goes to the 3.0-liter Duramax diesel for economy, to the ride comfort on the magnetic-damper suspension, and to how controlled a vehicle of this size feels on the road. Criticisms are fuel consumption on the gasoline V8s, cargo space behind the third row that is still poor next to a Suburban, and prices on High Country that reach luxury-brand territory. Interior materials on the base LS have repeatedly been called too plain for the money.

The Tahoe is more refined on-road than expected for a body-on-frame SUV, making it a surprisingly easy truck to live with.

Was it a success?

A consistent commercial success and the dominant vehicle in the full-size SUV class alongside its GMC and Cadillac siblings. Resale is strong, helped by demand for used Tahoes as family haulers and by fleet buyers. Reliability reputation is decent for the drivetrain, with the same lifter and cylinder-deactivation oil-consumption cautions as the Silverado V8s, plus air-suspension and transmission complaints on some 2021-2022 cars. Tires are the cheapest part of ownership if the vehicle is on 18s and one of the more expensive if it is on 22s.

Tire options on the Chevrolet Tahoe

LS and LT trims run 265/65R18, which is the tall, comfortable and cheap fitment and the one with the best winter tire choice. Twenty-inch trims use 275/55R20 up to 2020 and 275/60R20 from 2021, while RST, Premier and High Country sit on 285/45R22 or 275/50R22, sizes that look the part but ride firmly and cost roughly twice as much to replace. Nothing is staggered and no Tahoe comes with factory run-flats; OE fitments are usually Bridgestone Dueler, Goodyear Eagle or Hankook Dynapro all-seasons, with Goodyear Wrangler all-terrains on Z71. A common owner move is to buy a set of 18-inch wheels for a 22-inch truck for winter use, which works because the brake package allows it on most trims. If you tow near the 8,000-pound-plus rating, keep the OE load index rather than fitting a lighter passenger tire, and check that any all-terrain you choose is rated for the vehicle's gross axle weight.
