It is longer and lower than the B7 it replaced and the hood opens clamshell-style. Base cars ran 17-inch wheels; Premium Plus and Prestige moved to 18s, and the S4 to 18s or 19s.

Fifth generation (B9)
Almost the same silhouette as the B8 but flatter and sharper, with a wider hexagonal grille, a crisp shoulder line running through the door handles and horizontal tail lights. The 2020 facelift added deeper sculpting in the hood and a wider lower grille. Wheels are 17 to 19 inches, with 18s the common US fitment on Premium Plus.

US sales sat above 34,000 a year through 2018 and then fell steadily to 7,036 in 2024 as the nameplate wound down in favor of the A5.
Was it a success?
The A4 was a commercial success for two decades and then faded as buyers moved to the Q5, which now outsells it several times over. Resale is mid-pack for the segment, better than the equivalent Mercedes C-Class and behind the 3 Series. Reliability reputation is fair rather than good: the 2.0-liter turbo four is strong but earlier versions had oil consumption and timing chain tensioner issues, and out-of-warranty repair costs are the usual German sedan story.

Tire options on the Audi A4

The common US fitments are 225/50R17 on base cars, 245/40R18 on Premium Plus and S line trims, and 245/35R19 at the top; nothing is staggered on the A4 itself, though S4 and RS models can be. Because quattro drives all four wheels through a mechanical center differential, Audi wants all four tires the same make, model and tread depth, and replacing only two on a high-mileage car is a real way to wear out a differential; if you must, put the new pair on the rear and have the old pair shaved to match.
