Lamborghini has been part of Volkswagen Group through Audi since 1998 and builds the Huracan, the Revuelto and the Urus SUV. US sales are in the low thousands a year, and the Urus alone accounts for most of them, which has changed what a Lamborghini tire order looks like. The brand's identity is mid-engined V10 and V12 supercars, and the Urus is a supercar drivetrain in an SUV body.

For tires that means extremely wide rear fitments and, on the Urus, an SUV construction asked to cope with supercar speeds.

Tires on a Lamborghini

Lamborghini-approved tires are marked with an L on the sidewall, and the approvals are model-specific, sometimes unique to a single car. The Urus in particular has its own set, because it needs an SUV carcass that still holds together at the speeds the car is capable of, and an ordinary SUV tire in the same size is not an equivalent even though it fits. Every model is heavily staggered: the Huracan runs 245/30R20 front and 305/30R20 rear, the older Gallardo 235/35R19 and 295/30R19, and the Urus 285/45R21 front with 315/35R21 rear, or 285/40R22 and 325/35R22 on the 22 inch wheels.

Nothing rotates, rears wear two to three times faster than fronts, and a pair of rears is the standard purchase. The 245/30R20 front on a Huracan has barely three inches of sidewall, so curbs and potholes are a wheel risk as much as a tire risk. Pirelli holds most of the approvals with Bridgestone on the Urus, and in some sizes only one L-marked pattern exists, so availability rather than preference decides.

Winter fitments exist for the Urus and are genuinely used, which is unusual for the brand.

The models that matter

The Urus is the volume model and the one most Lamborghini tire orders are for, on 285/45R21 front with 315/35R21 rear or 285/40R22 with 325/35R22. The Huracan runs 245/30R20 front and 305/30R20 rear. The 2004 to 2013 Gallardo, still a substantial parc in the US, uses 235/35R19 front and 295/30R19 rear, and its 19 inch sizes are less expensive and more widely stocked than the newer 20 and 21 inch fitments.

What owners find out later

The Urus wears tires at a rate closer to a supercar than an SUV, and rear sets lasting under 10,000 miles are normal rather than a fault. None of these cars carries a spare. Pressure sensors are matched to the car, so a winter wheel package needs its own coded in, and the Urus's optional carbon ceramic brakes leave little clearance behind the spokes for aftermarket wheels.

Because supercar tires spend most of their life parked, age rather than tread depth is usually what ends them, and a set with visible tread can still be past its safe service life.
