About the Jeep Wrangler TJ

The TJ is the second-generation Jeep Wrangler, built for the 1997 through 2006 model years, and it is the one that brought coil springs to the Wrangler. Tire buyers land here mostly for two reasons: the factory sizes are small and cheap by modern standards, and almost every TJ still on the road has been upsized at least once. Stock fitments are 15-inch, and 31-, 33- and 35-inch tires are all common upgrades.

Contemporary reviewers welcomed the TJ as a real improvement, crediting the coil springs with taming the YJ's ride without hurting off-road articulation and praising the return of round headlights. The criticism was the same as it always is with a Wrangler: noise, a cramped interior, poor crash protection compared to a car, slow steering and an underwhelming 2.5-liter four in base trim. The 4.0-liter inline-six drew consistent praise and remains the reason many people still want one. The Rubicon, added for 2003 with front and rear lockers and a low-range transfer case, was received as the most capable factory Jeep ever sold at the time.

Jeep reported Wrangler sales as a single nameplate, and US volume during the TJ years ran between roughly 64,000 and 90,000 a year; no separate published figure exists for the TJ alone, and the 1997 and 1998 US numbers are not in the published series.

Was it a success?

A commercial success in its day and a cult object now. TJ values bottomed out in the early 2010s and have climbed since, with clean 4.0-liter Rubicons and long-wheelbase LJ Unlimiteds commanding prices that would have looked absurd fifteen years ago. The 4.0-liter six has a deserved reputation for lasting; rust in the frame rails, floor pans and rear crossmember is what actually kills these trucks, and it is the first thing to inspect on any survivor.
