Nitto was founded in Japan in 1949 and has been a subsidiary of Toyo Tire since 1979. Nitto Tire USA operates from Cypress, California and focuses almost entirely on the American enthusiast market: lifted trucks, Jeeps, muscle cars and tuner cars. Many Nitto tires are built in Toyo's plant in White, Georgia, with the rest from Japan and Malaysia.

The Grappler line is what made Nitto's reputation. The Ridge Grappler is the tire that popularized the hybrid category between all-terrain and mud-terrain, and it remains one of the best-selling truck tires in the US for its aggressive look and civilized road manners. The Terra Grappler G3 and Recon Grappler A/T are the true all-terrains with mileage warranties, and the Trail Grappler M/T is a full mud-terrain. For cars, the Motivo is a solid ultra-high-performance all-season and the NT555 G2 is a summer tire aimed at Mustang and Camaro owners.

Nitto prices at or above Toyo, and in popular light-truck sizes a set of Ridge Grapplers costs as much as Michelin. Warranties are shorter than the mainstream brands: 65,000 miles on the Terra Grappler G3 and Recon Grappler, none on the Ridge Grappler or Trail Grappler. Nitto is a style-and-capability buy, not a value buy, and the hybrid tires are heavy and will trim fuel economy.

Nitto is run as a US-focused brand out of Toyo's Southern California offices - Nitto Tire U.S.A., Inc. was formalized in 1999 and has long been listed at Cypress, California, with the brand's current mailing address in Costa Mesa alongside Toyo Tire U.S.A. Most Nitto tires for the US market are built at Toyo's plant in White, Georgia. The brand leans hard on the enthusiast market - drag radials, extreme- and all-terrain truck tires and street-performance sizes - and sells mainly through independent dealers, wheel-and-tire shops, off-road specialists and online retailers rather than big service chains.

All financial figures, employee counts, plant counts, rank and market share in this record are TOYO TIRE GROUP figures, not Nitto-only: Nitto does not report separately. Group revenue JPY 594,923 million and operating income JPY 97,350 million for the year ended 31 December 2025, converted at 150 JPY/USD; employees 11,202 consolidated as at 31 December 2024. Rank 11 and market share 1.9% are Toyo Tire Corp.'s position in the Global Tire Report 2025 (fiscal 2024 tire sales of $3,433.2 million against the $180.2 billion Top 75 aggregate). Headquarters: Nitto's official site gives a Costa Mesa, California mailing address and Toyo Tire U.S.A. is headquartered at 3565 Harbor Blvd, Costa Mesa; US federal filings and business records list Nitto Tire U.S.A., Inc. at 5665 Plaza Drive, Cypress, California, so both cities appear in current sources. The 1979 Toyo acquisition year is from secondary sources (trade and reference sites), not a Toyo press release - treat it as approximate. Group tire production in tires or tonnes is not published.

Did you know?

  • Nitto is a Japanese brand from 1949, not an American start-up - but it has been run primarily as a US-facing enthusiast brand since Toyo gave it its own North American company in 1999.
  • Nitto tires sold in the US are largely built at Toyo's plant in White, Georgia, which is the Toyo group's biggest factory at around 14 million tires a year.
  • Nitto develops its own tread patterns rather than rebadging Toyo designs, which is why sizes and patterns such as the NT555 and Ridge Grappler have no Toyo equivalent.

Nitto tires: common questions

Is Nitto owned by Toyo?

Yes. Toyo Tire has owned Nitto since 1979 and runs it as a separate enthusiast brand in the US. The two share factories, including the plant in White, Georgia, but their tread designs and marketing are independent.

Ridge Grappler or Terra Grappler G3, which should I pick?

The Ridge Grappler is a hybrid tire with a more aggressive tread, better off-road traction and no mileage warranty. The Terra Grappler G3 is a true all-terrain that is quieter, lighter, cheaper and warranted for 65,000 miles. If you drive mostly pavement, the G3 is the smarter buy; if looks and off-road grip matter, the Ridge Grappler is the one.

How long do Nitto Ridge Grapplers last?

Owners commonly report 40,000 to 55,000 miles from a set on a daily-driven truck, with lower figures on heavy or lifted rigs. There is no mileage warranty, so rotation every 5,000 miles and correct inflation matter more than usual.
